  • Civil ceremonies must be held in the morning and on weekdays only.
  • You must send an application letter for marriage to the Regional Commissioner’s Office indicating that you are both single and free to marry, that you wish to marry in Zanzibar and the intended date of your marriage. This letter will need to be notarised and you will need to send with it the following documentation:
    • Two photocopies of your passport
    • Birth registration certificates
    • Certification of domicile
    • Two passport photographs
    • A paper stating you are single (extremely important)
    • Names, birth dates and birth place of parents
  • You will need to submit the above documentation at least 25 days before your intended wedding day, and you will need to send these by registered mail or courier in order to ensure delivery.
  • PLEASE NOTE THAT ACCORDING TO ZANZIBAR LAWS, A NOTICE OF MARRIAGE MUST BE PUT UP ON THE MUNICIPAL NOTICE BOARD 21 DAYS PRIOR TO YOUR WEDDING DAY AND THIS IS MANDATORY – there is no waiver in the form of a special license.

Religious Weddings

To organise a religious wedding in Tanzania or Zanzibar it is recommended that you contact your local priest, minister or pastor. You will generally need a letter from your parish outlining that they have no problem with you marrying /that you have fulfilled their requirements for marriage along with the normal legal documents that have been outlined.
