You will need:
  • Both original birth certificates certified with an apostilles. –Note that the birth certificates must have been issued less than 6 months prior to the wedding. Both birth certificates must be translated into French by an approved translator and legalised by the French Consulate.  
  • Both valid passports
  • A ‘Certificate of Non Marital Status’ signed by a lawyer and legalised by the French Consulate – see below for form.
  • Proof of residency – A photocopy of a utility bill or any bill noting names and physical address for both of you is sufficient.
  • If a pre-nuptial agreement has been created, it must be translated in to French and authenticated by the French Consulate. 
  • Two witnesses over the age of 18.

  • Over the age of 18.
  • Of the opposite gender.
  • Not related by direct lineage.
  • Not of French origin or have residential status in France or any of its territories.

  • Once the documents have been received the Mayor’s Office will post a document ‘not opposing’ the marriage – ‘Publication Des Bans’.
  • The Mayor’s Office will contact you to advise of the approved date and time of the wedding.
  • Note that all legal ceremonies must take place at the local City Hall before any further celebration at the property of your choosing.
  • Once you are married, the Mayor will give you a Marriage Certificate which will be signed and dated there and then.
